Dogbook V.I.D (Very Important Dog)

The sight of these pictures filled me with pleasure yesterday. Sometimes some comes with a a great idea that just makes you laugh out loud. Well it’s not definitely recorded who did come up with this idea, but here it is, in its full glory: the Snausages race.

You’ll get the gist by looking at the photos, basically, it takes the noble tradition of sled dog racing and turns it on its head, as it were.

You might be aware of the Iditarod race, it’s a noble endurance test, pitting men and dogs against freezing temperatures and some of the hardest tracks known to man in late winter Alaska. Well the Snausages race – which you probably haven’t heard of – also takes place in Alaska and also involves snow and huskies but the pups aren’t the harness this time, they’re in the sled and it’s humans wallowing in front of the sleigh with bits of rope tied around their shoulders. Let’s just say that the dogs do a much better job.

Another whimsical take-off of the Iditarod occurs in San Francisco where fun young things harness each other up to shopping trolleys and race down the street. They claim it’s a homage to the great race, though I doubt the mushers or the dogs would recognise much in this little burst of high spirits.

It looks like a hell of a laugh, though we doubt anyone is going anywhere very fast. Congratulations to the husky for having the patience to sit there calmly while the humans flounder around. I think it’s smirking.
