As the book narrated by a dog creeps its way over the Atlantic, we have a look at just how a book told by a dog made it big time. It’s not a recipe for success, in fact the author – Garth Stein’s – agent actually dropped him when he told him about his plan to tell a whole novel through the voice of a dog.
However – whatever precedents may say about making the narrator a dog, the fact is that it has worked out for Garth Stein and his novel Racing in the Rain. The second agent fell for it ("I love it. I can sell it in a minute.") and so has the general population and the New York Times bestseller list. "I understand people may not want to read a book told by a dog," Stein said in a telephone interview from his home near Seattle, Wash. "But if they give me a few pages, I'll get them. The voice of Enzo is a fun voice, and compelling.' Enzo is a dog that longs to be a human, and have opposable thumbs. His master is a racing driver who has a difficult life. And don’t be expecting a cutey tale about love and puppies, this dog is an intellect with a curiosity for philosophy. It’s an emotional tale too about the human condition, what it means to be human and what it means to be a dog and to care for people. Anyway, after its success in the States, the book is out over in Europe and Australia. Get ready dog-lit lovers.. |
